This is a great time to be in computer science and digital communications R&D.
The relentless rise in computing power per dollar fueled the birth of computer science and
continues to drive its rapid development. Coupled with rapid improvements in communications
bandwidth, this trend is driving even more rapid development of digital communications.
Technology barriers are dissolving, making way for radically new possibilities.
This is a great time to be in a corporate research lab. Stable long term funding from a large corporate parent provides freedom to choose aggressive goals and make significant scientific contributions. Close connections with the corporate parent provides a good path whereby scientific breakthroughs can be turned into products and therefore have a strong impact on the world. A high level of collaboration among the staff allows very rapid progress to be made on large problems.
This is a great time to be at MERL. As attested by the number and significance of their refereed publications, MERL has some of the world's leading experts in Computer Vision, Audio & Video Processing, Digital Communications, Speech Interfaces, Mechatronics, Algorithms and other technology areas. As attested by the project descriptions in this web site, we are developing significant technology in many areas. Our overriding vision is to make steps forward that have a lasting impact on the world – steps that will be remembered 100 years from now.
